Design and FEM & CFD simulations of a Cable Cutter for the Oil Industry

Cable cutting devices are fundamental in the oil industry, playing a crucial role in operations that require safety and efficiency.
In the Mexican oil industry, however, there is a notable dependence on technologies with foreign distributors. With the aim of reducing this dependence and strengthening national capacity, a cable cutting device of national origin has been developed. This device not only seeks to guarantee technological autonomy.
The design and simulation of the device was carried out using SolidWorks©, a computer-aided design software. Initially, a design proposal was formulated according to specific parameters, followed by the meticulous selection of materials for the fabrication of the device's components. Subsequently, both static and fluid analysis simulations were performed to thoroughly evaluate its performance.
In the static analysis, the Von Mises stresses for the device body and hydraulic body were 475,130,208 Pa and 257,019,664 Pa, respectively. The displacements were less than 0.02 mm and the safety factors were between 1.50 and 2.92. This national development improves the technological independence in the Mexican oil industry and can increase the safety and efficiency of the operations.
